What do we know about young women’s mental health?
Mental health problems are on the rise, especially among young women. This is very clear from surveys of people’s own perceptions of their mental health. For example, more and more young women report poor mental health in the National Health Profile compiled by the Danish Health Authority. For every ten young women with poor mental health recorded in 2010, there were fourteen in 2017. According to Vidensrådet for Forebyggelse (the Danish council for preventative medicine), the trend has been negative over the past twenty years for almost all indicators of the state of the mental health among children and young people. Only the proportion of suicides among young people and the incidence of psychological and psychosomatic symptoms have not increased during this period. Young women are the most severely affected for almost all indicators measured.
